7 web design terms you must know!
Working with a web design agency for the first time can be a little daunting, especially if they start speaking in tech terms and you aren’t up to speed on what they mean.
If you don’t know your responsive websites from your plugins then this article is for you!
Blog – A blog can be a standalone website or a part of your website that works as a type of journal. It allows you to post articles to your website in a sort of news or journal format. Users of your website can comment on your blog posts and your blog posts can include text, images, video or pretty much any other content you fancy.
Web Host – Your web host is the company that provides you the available space, online, to store your website files. Your website files have to be stored online so that they can be retrieved as your website. A webhost stores all of your pages, images, videos & content etc. You can have shared web hosting which means lots of other websites are hosted on the same server as yours or you can have dedicated web hosting which is your own personal server with only your website hosted there.
The cloud – An wonderful place in the sky – The cloud is a little like webhosting in which it gives you the ability to store your files online. It’s a bit more complex than hosting as it is easily scalable and allows you to work with others in real time on the same files at the same time.
Responsive web design – This means that your website automatically scales to fit the size of the screen it is being viewed upon. To be fully responsive all of your content, fonts & images must resize as necessary to deliver a seamless experience across all devices without the design breaking.
Content Management System – often referred to as a CMS, your content management system is the behind the scenes bit of your website that allows you to change your websites content and add new pages etc. Most are very user friendly and allow you to make changes to your pages without having to touch any code or risk breaking your website.
Plugins – an addition to a platform such as WordPress, a plugin allows the basic platform to be built up on and add additional features to it.
WordPress – Probably the most common web platform out there. WordPress allows you to power your blog or act as your content management system. WordPress is an open source platform and comes with many benefits that you can read about here: WordPress Benefits.
