Large-scale SEO is the process of improving organic visibility across a website with a lot of pages, sections, templates or people involved.

Large-scale SEO often overlaps with enterprise SEO, but they are not exactly the same. Enterprise SEO usually means SEO for large organisations. Large-scale SEO is about the complexity of the website itself.

Why SEO for large websites is different

SEO works differently when a website has hundreds, thousands or millions of URLs.

Unlike with small websites, you cannot optimise every page manually. You need to improve the templates, rules and processes that affect pages at scale. That might mean changing how title tags are generated, how internal links are added, how filters are handled or how similar pages are managed.

This is where small issues become expensive. A missing canonical tag on one page is a small fix. The same issue across 20,000 URLs can waste crawl budget, create duplicate content and make it harder for search engines to understand which pages matter.

Start with a technical SEO audit

Crawlability. Can search engines access the pages that matter, or are key sections blocked, buried or difficult to reach?

Indexability. Are the right pages eligible to appear in Google, or is the site building up index bloat from low value URLs?

XML sitemaps. Do XML sitemaps include indexable and important URLs, or are they full of redirected, blocked, duplicate or low value pages?

Robots.txt. Are crawl rules helping search engines focus on the right areas, or blocking sections that should be visible?

Canonical tags. Do canonical tags point to the preferred version of each page, especially where filters, parameters, tracking URLs or duplicate templates exist?

Duplicate content. Are similar pages competing with each other across services, products, resources, locations or international sections?

Redirects and 404s. Are redirect chains, broken links or missing pages creating crawl waste, poor user journeys or migration risk?

Internal linking. Do priority pages receive enough internal links, or are important commercial pages relying on ad hoc links?

Core Web Vitals (CWV). Do key templates perform well for loading speed, responsiveness and visual stability?

Mobile performance. Does the site work properly on mobile, even if most B2B enquiries happen later on desktop?

JavaScript rendering. Can search engines see important content, links and calls to action loaded through JavaScript?

Schema. Is structured data helping search engines understand key page types, or is it missing, duplicated or broken at template level?

Hreflang. Are international or multilingual pages mapped correctly, using hreflang tags , so the right country or language version can appear in search?

Analytics and tracking. Can you measure the impact of SEO on enquiries, calls, form submissions, downloads, qualified leads and pipeline?

Template-level issues. Are problems coming from individual pages, or from the templates, rules and systems behind them?

The output should not be a huge spreadsheet that nobody uses. Each recommendation should be grouped by impact, urgency and implementation difficulty, so your team can see what to fix first, what needs development resource and what can wait.

Prioritise the pages that matter most

On a large website, not every page deserves the same amount of SEO time. A small number of pages may drive a large share of organic traffic, enquiries or revenue. Those pages should get more attention than low value pages that rarely support commercial goals.

For a B2B website, priority pages might include core service pages, product or category pages, high traffic landing pages, international pages, location pages and content that supports high value services.

Search engines use your site structure to understand how pages relate to each other. Your most important pages should be easy to find, clearly grouped and supported by internal links.

For ecommerce websites, the structure usually centres on categories, subcategories and product pages. The goal is the same: make the hierarchy easy to follow and keep important commercial pages close to the main journey.

Clean URL folders, breadcrumbs, scalable navigation and HTML sitemaps can all help, but only when they support a logical structure. They should make the site easier to understand, not add more clutter.

The simple rule is this: if a page matters commercially, users and search engines should be able to reach it easily.

 

Help Google focus on the right pages

Large websites need to help search engines focus on the right pages, as they do not treat every URL equally. Instead, search engines decide which pages to crawl, how often to revisit them and whether they should be indexed. On a small website, this is usually easier to manage. On a large website, low value URLs can quickly get in the way.

Crawl budget is the time and resource search engines spend crawling your site. If that time is wasted on filters, sort pages, parameters, internal search pages or duplicate pages, important commercial pages may not get crawled or updated as often as they should.

Indexation needs the same level of control. Not every URL should appear in Google. Some pages are useful for users but do not need to rank. This is where clear rules matter. Your XML sitemaps should include the pages you want search engines to find and index. Robots.txt, noindex tags, canonical tags and redirects can then be used to control how low-value, duplicate, old or replaced URLs are handled.

The aim is simple: make it easy for search engines to find, crawl and index the pages that support traffic, enquiries and revenue, while keeping low-value URLs under control.

 

Control duplicate content before it scales

Duplicate content is easier to manage when a site is small. On a large website, it can spread quickly through templates, filters, parameters and repeated page formats.

The issue is not a “duplicate content penalty”. If several URLs target the same intent, search engines have to decide which one should rank. That can split authority, create ranking volatility and cause the wrong page to appear in search results.

Large websites often create duplicate or near-duplicate content through similar service pages, location pages with near-identical copy, sector pages with only minor wording changes, auto-generated content management system (CMS) pages, tracking parameters, printer-friendly pages, old versions of pages, product variants and faceted navigation.

It can also happen after acquisitions, rebuilds or platform changes. If multiple content management systems, legacy sections or old URL structures stay live, the site may end up with several versions of similar pages competing with each other.

The fix starts with clear rules. You need to decide which pages should rank, which pages should be consolidated and which pages should stay out of the index.

That might mean using canonical tags to point search engines to the preferred version, redirecting old or duplicated URLs, consolidating weaker pages into stronger ones, or using noindex tags where pages are useful for users but not valuable in search.

Content templates matter too. If location, service or sector pages all use the same copy with only a few words changed, they are unlikely to perform well at scale. Important pages need enough unique value to justify their place in the index. Of course, some repetition is normal on large websites, but you want to stop multiple URLs competing for the same rankings, traffic and enquiries.

Fix technical issues at template level

Most large sites run on templates. That means the same layout, metadata rules, schema, internal linking modules or performance issues can appear across hundreds or thousands of pages.

If hundreds of service pages have weak metadata, rewriting each one manually is not the best use of time. The better fix is to improve the CMS rule that generates those titles and descriptions.

The same applies to other technical issues. If every blog page has poor Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), the layout template needs attention. If all category or resource pages are missing schema, the template should be updated. If filtered URLs are being indexed, the parameter and indexation rules need to be fixed at source.

JavaScript issues should also be reviewed at site level. If key content, links or calls to action are hidden from search engines because of how the front end loads, you need to know whether that affects one section or the whole site.

Create a content strategy that supports the sales journey

Large websites do not need more content for the sake of it. They need a content strategy that helps the right pages rank, supports the sales journey and avoids overlap.

Creating a content strategy for a large website should always start with keyword mapping. Each important keyword or topic should have a clear target page. Without this, teams often create several pages chasing the same search intent. This leads to content cannibalisation, where multiple pages compete against each other instead of one strong page ranking properly.

Once the keyword map is clear, the next step is deciding what type of page is needed for each topic. This list should cover the main types of content and pages the strategy needs to account for, so every page has a clear role rather than simply adding more content to the site:

Comparison content, FAQs and buying guides. This content should be designed to answer the questions people ask before they speak to sales, such as what solution they need, how different options compare, what affects cost and what to look for in a supplier.

For B2B websites, content usually needs to support a long sales cycle. A potential customer may start with an early informational search, move into comparing suppliers, review case studies and only then make an enquiry. Your content should support that full journey.

As a final point, existing content should not be ignored. Large websites often have years of articles, guides and landing pages that no longer perform. Of these, some should be refreshed, some should be consolidated, and some should be removed or redirected if they overlap with stronger pages.

 

Internal linking helps search engines understand which pages matter and how different parts of the site relate to each other. If a page has no internal links pointing to it, search engines may struggle to find it or judge its importance, and users are unlikely to find it either.

On a large website, this process cannot rely on occasional manual links. Important commercial pages should receive regular, relevant links from supporting content, service pages, industry pages, case studies and navigation elements.

For example, a B2B manufacturer with a page for precision CNC machining could support it with articles on material selection, production tolerances, lead times, quality control, prototyping and batch production. Those articles may attract earlier-stage research, then guide users towards the main service page when they are ready to compare suppliers.

Service pages should also link to relevant case studies. This gives users proof that the work has been done before and helps connect expertise with commercial intent.

Industry pages should link to relevant services too. If an aerospace manufacturing page discusses strict tolerances, traceability and compliance requirements, it should point users towards the services that solve those problems.

Breadcrumbs, related content blocks and well-placed contextual links all help. They make the site easier to navigate and reduce the risk of important pages becoming isolated.

 

Plan migrations carefully

Website migrations are riskier when the site is large.For example, missed redirect on a small site might affect one page, but a missed redirect rule on a large site can affect thousands of URLs. The same applies to lost metadata, broken canonical tags, missing internal links, changed templates, blocked pages or tracking issues.

For large websites, migration planning should cover:

URL mapping. Every important old URL should have a clear destination on the new site.

Redirect rules. Redirects should be tested before launch, not checked after rankings move.

Staging checks. The new site should be crawled before launch to catch technical issues early.

Crawl comparisons. The old and new site should be compared to spot missing pages, changed templates or lost SEO signals.

Metadata migration. Important titles, descriptions and headings should not disappear during the rebuild.

Canonical checks. Canonical tags should point to the correct preferred URLs across key templates.

XML sitemap updates. Sitemaps should include indexable URLs from the new site.

Make international SEO clear for each market

For large websites operating across multiple countries, languages or regions, international SEO needs to be planned carefully. It is not enough to copy the same pages into another folder and change a few surface details. As the site grows, it becomes easier for regional versions of pages to overlap, compete with each other or send unclear signals to search engines.

Hreflang is a key part of this. Hreflang tells search engines which language or regional version of a page should be shown to users. It should only point to clean, indexable, equivalent pages, and it needs to stay consistent across templates, sitemaps and regional sections.

URL structure also needs to be clear. Some international sites use country folders, such as /uk/ and /de/. Others use subdomains or separate country domains. There is no single best option for every business, but the structure should be consistent, scalable and easy to manage.

Content should be localised, not just translated. A page for one market may need different terminology, examples, services, regulations, proof points, currency, delivery information, office details or sales contacts. These signals help users and search engines understand who the page is for.

Duplicate regional pages need careful handling too. UK, US, Ireland or Australia pages may look similar, but they still need enough local relevance to justify separate URLs. Otherwise, search engines may struggle to understand which version should rank.

Large international websites should also have the right Google Search Console properties, clean international XML sitemaps, accurate canonical tags and reliable indexation rules. Each market needs to be measured properly, not buried inside one overall traffic report.

Automatic redirects need caution. Redirecting users based on location can seem helpful, but it can also block crawlers or stop users reaching the version they actually want. Search engines need to access each regional version without being forced somewhere else.
